The book I read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle has many possibilities that I could relate to when going to write my children’s novel. The content of the book when I was younger really reached out to me. I can still see how it is a very good piece of children’s literature. The theme in this book is the caterpillar learns the meaning of changing and how it might not be good at first. However it turns out fine in the end. Also it relates to young kids if they eat too much food they will feel sick. It shows them the concept of overfilling your stomach. I like how he used several types of food as well as a unique food combination. This makes the story more enjoyable for younger kids. I can use that technique in my writing by making a ridiculous combination of something making it have a sense of humor. The setting in this book was a tree leaf and the caterpillar eating different kinds of food. I would use a nature setting for my book when creating the story as well. The caterpillar goes through a learning experience which I feel like id touch on in my story.
There are a couple of ways that that the author arranges the text and uses style to create distinctive effects in the story. One way Carle arranges the text is when he uses time. He arranges it so it is relatable to understand. He uses days of the week like Monday and Tuesday, as well as comprehendible amounts of time like two weeks. He also uses comprehendible words when talking about the food the caterpillar ate. For example he used simple numbers to relate to like 1 Apple 2 Pears and 3 Plums. The food choices are also relatable. There are no foods that seem hard to concept as a child. I would make sure that I use relatable items when writing my own novel. Next he uses big font when in part of the story to emphasize the importance of the part. On the page this occurs it says suddenly he did not feel good. This would stick out to a child because they see this huge font so it must be important. That is a good way to focus on a main point in the story. The author also uses his style by using repetition to the main point of the story. When he says “and he was still hungry” this emphasizes the importance of how hungry the caterpillar was. I could use that in my style of writing too as well as all of the other components.
